2009: An Elly and Stu Odyssey
11Dec09
(posted by stuartgrant)Hi all,
The kids’ group from our church (St. John’s Launceston) asked us to make a 5 minute video showing what we get up to here in Bulgaria.
Below is the result! But first, here is the disclaimer:
—
Disclaimer! (note the large, bolded text and exclamation marks):
1. It’s a pretty daggy video. We’re very sorry to our friends and relations (not to mention our future children!) for making such a fine piece of cinematographic uncoolness. Perhaps we should have read this post.
2. We also keep saying “hello, Stepping Stones!” which I’m sure you can forgive, since that’s the name of the aforementioned kids’ group. If you want us to make a video where we repeatedly say “hello, <your name>!”, we’d be happy to do so. Just leave a comment with your request.
3. Being intended for a young audience, we inexplicably started using the dreaded Play School voice when addressing the camera. This was entirely unintentional. Enjoy. Note that we have already turned 21; your opportunities to use this against us are diminishing.
4. We speak in Turkish. Just a little bit. Note how I (Stu) move my eyes up and to the left when I’m thinking of the right verb+tense+case to use (maybe we should have scripted it?). Hence my complaint about brain strain!
5. This isn’t strictly part of the disclaimer. In fact, this point is for of a proclaimer. Aydin is awesome in front of a camera! Check out how he ad libs heaps of funny stuff, including the timeless “bagging out Mum and Dad” joke! Amazing.
Anyway, I can’t delay it any longer. Go on. Watch and laugh.

haha… you guys make me laugh! I love the ladies scarf stu
I keep seeing things on tv and thinking, “hey, I’ve been there”. And now I’m watching this and thinking, “hey, I’ve sat on that couch, and walked up that street, and stook in that doorway.”
Oh, and can I place an order for you guys to “swede” a video with you guys repeated saying “merhaba ” ?

Awesome, guys! Aydin is so funny. (Imagine him and Emily in the same room!) I can totally see you guys on Play School too…I love that show. The girls are no longer particularly interested in watching it, but I sometimes watch it with Felix.
Humph, what is “stooking” in a doorway, and don’t you think you should stop it?
It made me feel sad to see the Mahalle and the church…we are so spoilt here with lovely buildings and maintenance budgets.
Thanks for the vid. Love you guys. xx

Well Sally, according to thefreedictionary.com, stook is “a number of sheaves set upright in a field to dry with their heads together”. Therefore stooking is setting a number of sheaves uright in a field to dry. Or, when you’re in a communist flat it is setting a number of pieces of clothing upright to dry near the heater. :-s
Either that, or I misspelt a common word. But one of those options requires me to admit that I was wrong

Classic! Thanks for setting me straight Humph. I will never doubt your spelling again (although I may occasionally pretend to if it will elicit responses as funny as that one).

You know… I so remember you now being a number of pieces of clothing near our door. And all over our living room. Yeah… Nice word usage

That’s not a lady-scarf!! That’s an awesome scarf Stu! I dig it!
Great video guys – can you make me one so you can say ‘hi Heather’ all the way through it?!! (no, it’s ok, you don’t have to!) Seriously though, it was really cool to see your surroundings in action, rather than just photos – makes you feel that bit closer – so you can make some more playschool vids if you want! Maybe you guys can sing the song this time instead of just leaving it to Aydin
Miss yoooooouuuuu both!
Love Heth
